Couples health insurance

Couples health insurance can be as cheap as $45 per week – a couples policy is less hassle than 2 single policies, but you won't save money by being on a shared plan.

We’re reader-supported and may be paid when you visit links to partner sites. We don’t compare all products in the market, but we’re working on it!

What you need to know

  • Couples health insurance can cut down your life admin. For example, if you like the convenience of holding one policy from one provider.
  • If you have different needs than your partner, for instance, if you need Gold-tier cover for your pregnancy, an individual policy is likely a better option.
  • Couples health insurance starts at around $45 a week for a basic combined policy.

How does couples health insurance work?

Couples health insurance can help you and your partner with the cost of medical bills. You pay a regular premium and, in exchange, a percentage of your costs will be covered.

There are three types of policies to choose from: hospital, extras or combined.

Stethoscope

Hospital policies

There are four hospital tiers to choose from: basic, bronze, silver and gold. The higher the level, the better coverage you get. Both you and your partner need to be on the same level in order to qualify for couples health insurance.

Dental

Extras policies

Extras policies come with annual spending limits for specific benefits. These limits are per person. So if you have $200 each to spend on dental appointments, your partner wouldn't be able to use your portion and vice versa.

Health insurance

Combined policies

A health insurance policy that includes both extras and hospital cover is considered a 'combined' policy. Combined policies reduce your paperwork by having all your cover with one provider. That said, you are allowed to have hospital and extras cover with different funds – and it's often cheaper.

By taking out couples health insurance, you and your partner have to commit to the same plan. So, if one of you requires Gold cover, you'll both have to pay for the top-tier coverage.

If you're looking for the cheapest hospital cover for couples, you can also visit our guide to cheap health cover.

How to find the best couples health insurance

There's no single best couples health insurance – what's best for you might not be for someone else.

That said, here are some key features to keep in mind when comparing:

  • Tier. Hospital policies come in four tiers. Each tier must cover specific health categories. The higher the level, the more categories covered. The tier of your policy is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing health insurance.
  • Benefits. If your hospital policy is a "plus" policy, it is essentially "in between" tiers and has extra benefits. Keep an eye on which benefits you're getting as you don't want to pay more for health categories you won't use.
  • Excess. All hospital policies have an excess. This is the amount you have to pay before the insurer will start helping. The higher the excess, the lower the premium, but the more you'll be out of pocket if you have to claim.
  • Waiting periods. Both hospital and extras policies come with waiting periods. This is the length of time you have to wait between buying your policy and being able to claim on specific health categories. Look for shorter waiting periods or deals that waive them altogether.
  • Annual limits. Extras policies have annual limits on the amount you can claim per health service. Higher limits are great if you regularly use those services, but you'll also pay more.
  • Price. The price of health insurance varies by cover type, but a basic hospital and extras policy may start from $90 per month while a Gold policy can top $350.

'Restricted' means insurers are allowed to offer cover for this clinical category on a restricted basis or with limited benefits.

Is couples health insurance cheaper than 2 single policies?

No, a couples health insurance policy isn't cheaper than having 2 single policies – it's typically the same price if you choose the same cover. A couples policy can be more convenient because you only have to apply once and maintain one direct debit, but it won't cost any less than two individual policies.

Having 2 single health insurance policies may actually save you money, because one of you may be able to opt for a cheaper policy. For example, if only one person needs pregnancy cover, having a couples policy would have you unneccessarily paying for pregnancy cover for both of you.

Of course, if both partners want the benefits offered by a gold-tier policy, there's no harm in taking out a joint policy. In addition to pregnancy and childbirth benefits, gold-tier policies also cover weight-loss surgery, joint replacements and more.

Did you know?
Finder surveyed 1,017 Aussies and just 36% knew two single policies were the same price as a couples policy.

How couples health insurance works with tax

Couples health insurance affects tax in the following ways:

  • Lifetime health cover loading: The lifetime health cover of both policyholders will be averaged and then applied to the policy. That means if your partner has a 10% loading fee, but you don't have any, your couples policy will be subject to a 5% charge.
  • Medicare levy surcharge: If you earn more than $180,000 as a couple, you'll be subject to a surcharge of between 1% and 1.5%. However, if you buy a health insurance policy with an excess of $1,500 or less you could save money.

Couples health insurance vs family insurance

If you have children, then your best bet is to sign up for a family health insurance policy, rather than a couples policy.

On a family policy your children can be covered at no extra cost, as long as you inform your insurer and officially add them to your policy. If you on your own with kids, then single parent health insurance is what you should look for.

If you're looking for a health insurance policy that is particularly good for people with children, there are a few features to look out for, including the following:

  • No excess on child hospital admissions
  • How long your child can stay on your policy for
  • Cover that includes orthodontics – typically, part of extras cover

      Hi Paula,

Thank you for getting in touch with finder.

You’re currently at the right page. Kindly select the answer that suits your needs most. For example, if you require orthodontics health cover then you must choose hospital and extras then enter your postcode then click on the orange Search Policies button to start comparing your options. Please note that with most insurance policies, you can choose how basic or comprehensive you want your dental cover to be.

I also suggest that you contact your top 3 chosen insurers for further assistance on choosing the policy for you and your husband.

      I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

      Cheers,
      Jeni

Join a restricted membership fund. If you are eligible, premiums are usually lower and benefits are higher.

Who and what are a restricted membership fund?

      Hi Angela,

      Thank you for your question.

Restricted health funds are the funds where membership is restricted to certain people. They are usually operated by industry or employment groups and are not-for-profit, being run solely for the benefit of their members. You can apply for cover to two restricted health funds, namely CBHS and Teachers Health Fund.

You may find our restricted health fund guide helpful. The table on that guide lists all the restricted health funds and conditions for joining these funds.

      Cheers,
